Music

"A guitar playing, the singer elevating his voice for a sentimental satirical or a simple entertaining song, snapping his fingers as imitating castanets; the ladies that are asked by the gentlemen, or volunteer themselves, or encouraged by their girlfriends, prepare themselves for the dance, thus starts the first chamarrita", writes Professor Júlio de Andrade in his book Bailhos, Rodas e Cantorias.

Characteristic only of the Azores, Chamarrita is very appreciated by Pedro Miguel village and by all the population of Faial Island. Nowadays it is recognized not only by the Azorean people but also by all of those who visit the Blue Island. The on lookers watch with their eyes shining, their hands clapping to the sound of Chamarrita, wishing to participate in a custom so ancient but so present in the lives of the Failense and others’.
The most prominent sound of the Chamarrita, as performed by the Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Pedro Miguel, captivating the attention of all the audience, is the stroke of the guitar. Its player, Mr. Manuel da Terra, already retired, having reached the age of 90 years, gave a personal touch to Pedro Miguel’s Chamarrita, transforming it to something unique and unmistakable.
In 1999, the Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Pedro Miguel, launched its CD entitled Manter Tradições, with the following dances that can be sample here:
